Halloween Woodcock
October 31st, 2009
The northern birds must have arrived. My young German Shorthair and I hunted for one hour this afternoon between 2:30 and 3:30 and managed to kill a limit of three birds. This was the dog’s first hunt of the season and the first birds ever killed over him. He pointed some grouse for me last February but I never could get a shot. Today, he flushed the first bird, flash-pointed the second bird, and held a solid point on the third bird. He impressed me further by finding the third bird after I could not. The habitat was forest edge. A narrow band of young thick hardwoods bordering mature timber provided the cover (natural edge feathering). The forest edge blended into an old field that has not been bush-hogged for about 4 or 5 years. The field has grown up into goldenrod and sumac clumps. My neighbor has purposely avoided mowing this section specifically for wildlife. And I thank him.

Need good precision gunsmith
October 31st, 2009
I just got back from a Krgyzstan hunt, where my rifle took a bad fall when a horse slipped and fell into a ravine, resulting in what I suspect to be a bent barrel.
So far I have spoken to Mike Bryant in Texas, who is happy to do the work (rebarrel) quickly enough for me to do while I visit a friend, but if I don’t get to Texas to visit a friend, Bryant is a little out of the way to get to. I might be going to New York for a business trip, so are there any good smiths in that area who could do the work over a few days max while I am there? I woud consider another major city, providing I can get a cheap flight there and then carry on to NY. You ask why not get it done in here in Italy? Because the only smith in the entire country who I trust with it and who initally built the rifle would take no less than 9 months and charge a ridiculous amount of money for an imported barrel and the labour. Thanks. Btw, the Ibex hunt was a great success, but I will post a full report once I get a bit more time. Oct 2009
Ruger Super Blackhawk/Mossberg 835
October 31st, 2009
I am considering selling or trading a Ruger Superblackhawk .44 mag. And a Mossberg 835 to fund my latest rifle build. I am not sure exactly what a fair price is on either gun but the .44 has had 1 box of ammo through it and the shotgun a couple hundred rounds. I am looking for an adjustable tactical stock for my Remington 700 SA and tactical rings and bases and would consider trades. If anyone is interested make an offer. Also I live in WA consider the price of the transfer through FFL. Thanks.
